Ashland School District fosters a rich and diverse music program. In a time when budgets often minimize music programs, the Ashland School District still maintains strength and priority in music. At the district elementary level, general music specialists teach all students twice a week. In fifth grade, students are additionally invited to begin instruction on string instruments by meeting twice weekly to study violin, viola, cello, or bass. At the middle school, string students are placed, by advancement level, in one of two string orchestras and all district students are additionally given the option of beginning instruction in band. Two bands accommodate beginning and intermediate/advanced students. At the high school level, district students continue their music studies in classes such as concert orchestra, chamber orchestra, symphonic band, wind ensemble, jazz band, chamber choir, treble choir, concert choir, guitar/keyboard, music theater, or music theory. Under special arrangements with the school district, some upper level students may take music courses and/or private lessons at S.O.U. for college credit. Performances are an important part of any music program. Ashland School District orchestras, bands, and choirs give numerous holiday and other concerts, play for sports events, parades, assemblies, and graduation, and compete in festivals. In addition, many individual students participate every March in the annual District Solo and Ensemble Contest and are adjudicated by out-of town music specialists. Selected students may then go on to compete for honors at the state level. Feel free to drop in and observe the music classes of the Ashland School District! For more information, you may contact:
